2010-2011
Application Period
How does my child apply?
1. Choose a Magnet Program of interest.
2. Review entrance requirements in the magnet catalog.
3. Visit the school of interest.
4. Complete the application which is available at each magnet school or the Magnet Program Office, 1050 S. Foster Dr, Baton Rouge, LA 70806, 225-922-5443.
5.
Deliver the application and other required documents to the first school of choice on or before Friday, January 8, 2010 .
Note: High school seniors are not allowed to enroll into a magnet program.
APPLICATIONS ARE NOT PROCESSED ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS.
Applications received October 19, 2009, receive the same priority as those received on January 8, 2010. If more students apply than there are spaces available, a computerized SELECTION PROCESS will be used (based on Board approved priority selection factors) for all students seeking to enroll in a Magnet Program. Students NOT SELECTED during the random selection process will be placed in the program’s waiting pool. Students in the waiting pool may be assigned later as additional space becomes available.
How will I know if my child is accepted?
Applicants will be notified by mail of acceptance or waiting pool status. A student
’s acceptance is based on verification of his/her meeting the entrance requirements, including academic averages, reading and math stanine scores, and successful proficiency on the LEAP and iLEAP standardized tests. All magnet students and parents will be required to sign a contract acknowledging program expectations.
What if my child is in a
waiting pool?
Students in a waiting pool MUST reapply each year until accepted into a Magnet Program.
Can my child apply to any Magnet Program?
Yes, as long as he or she meets the entrance requirements.
Can my child apply to any Center of Excellence Program?
Yes, as long as he or she demonstrates an interest, takes at least one course in the area of interest, and maintains the retention requirements.
Will my child lose any credits already earned?
No. Magnet Programs enhance the education your child has already received.
What if my child is already enrolled in a Magnet/Center of Excellence Program?
Students currently enrolled do NOT need to reapply for that program. Students must apply for the next level school (elementary to middle; middle to high). In order to remain in a Magnet Program, students must maintain the requirements listed in the student/parent contract.
Students enrolled in 5th and 8th grade will receive priority admission to the next academic level only if they are enrolled for two complete consecutive semesters prior to applying for the next level.

’m interested but want more information, where can I go?
